Leather Hole Punch Tools

A hollow hole punch is generally made of a high carbon, heat treated tool steel. Each punch is bored out to the proper hole size, the slot milled, then precision ground to produce a very sharp cutting edge.

Some punches like the Osborne Arch Punches, are drop forged in one piece, in sizes from 3/16″ to 2-1/4″ in diameter. Metric sizes are also available. The arch punches have an inside taper which allows the punchings to pass easily through the barrel, unlike the standard hollow hole punches where you have to push the punchings out.

The hollow hole punch also comes in sets. A set will consist of a round slotted handle, the slotted end being threaded to accommodate various sized screw on tubes. This is a very handy tool and the tubes are replaceable individually or in sets. Punch sets come in a variety of different hole sizes so you should have no trouble finding what you need.

Besides the round hole punch there is also the oblong holed punch, also called the slot punch. Oblong hole punches are used for leather projects with buckles and for bag and strap projects.

Hollow Hole Punches are great for punching holes in leather, paper, plastic, wood, and many other soft materials. If you use a poly cutting board for a backer, like the ones used in the kitchen, these punches will stay sharp for a long time. I have read where using wood for a backer can dull your punches. I don’t know if this is true or not but with the poly cutting boards being fairly inexpensive… why take the chance!

If you are looking for a handy, household leather hole punching tool for that occasional extra belt hole or for that new watch strap which seems to be missing a hole, then you should get the revolving punch. It is a great household punch with a variety of small hole sizes all in one tool. Like the other punches, it can be used on a large variety of materals.
